The University of Portsmouth and The Security Institute have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), initiating a new venture.
The partnership will explore how both organisations can work together to develop professional and academic pathways into the security profession, support research and knowledge exchange, enhance student and practitioner engagement and create opportunities for mentoring, career development and networking.
The collaboration has been led by Dr John Akerele, Senior Lecturer in Security and Risk and Dr Iain Reid, Senior Lecturer in Cybercrime from the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Portsmouth.
To mark the signing, Sarah Austerberry, CSyP FSyI, Chief Executive Officer of The Security Institute, visited the campus on June 5 to detail her vision for the collaboration.
She emphasised the importance of widening access, creating opportunities for all, recognising the value of lived experience within the sector and advancing the professionalisation of security through evidence-based practice.
Dr Akerele from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences from the University of Portsmouth, said: “This is an exciting development for the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice. This partnership demonstrates our continued commitment to working closely with professional bodies and organisations in the security sector - meaningful knowledge exchange and reciprocal partnerships are essential in developing the future practitioners, researchers and sector leaders of tomorrow.”
Sarah Austerberry added: “We are thrilled to be joining forces with the University of Portsmouth. With their strong research expertise in risk and security management, this feels like a natural fit.
“I am passionate about widening access and creating meaningful opportunities for all - recognising the invaluable role that lived experience plays within the sector and I look forward to everything we will achieve together."
The University of Portsmouth is recognised for its expertise in risk and security management research, particularly through its Centre for Cybercrime and Economic Crime. As one of the largest groups of active researchers in these fields in the UK, the Centre works collaboratively across disciplines to better understand and address the challenges posed by cybercrime and economic crime, contributing to solutions that strengthen societal and organisational security and resilience.
Through its research, it provides risk management professionals with the knowledge and practical tools needed to anticipate, understand, and respond to an increasingly complex and evolving security landscape.
The collaboration brings together the expertise of both organisations to strengthen research and promote development across the sector, with members also benefiting from a Dean's Scholarship, offering a 15 per cent fees discount on the Professional Doctorate in Security Risk Management.
