If you're interested in improving sporting performance, supporting athletes with their rehabilitation or understanding the health benefits associated with physical activity, this BSc (Hons) Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Science dual degree can help you turn your interest into a fulfilling career.

Based in Portsmouth and St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, you’ll use a combination of theory, research and practical laboratory techniques to understand and improve human performance, while minimising the risks of sport-related injuries. You'll develop tools to help everyone – from those who play sport for fun to elite athletes – get the most out of their exercise.

Why do a dual degree?

You'll be based in Portsmouth in years one and two, and for six months or a year at the end of the course. You'll spend year three in St. Catharines, Canada at Brock University.

You'll get support with travel arrangements, visas, finding accommodation and accessing loans and other funding that can help pay for your study and living costs when you're in Canada.

St. Catharines is located in the heart of the Niagara region, and is bordered by two Great Lakes. It's only an hour away from Toronto, while offering picturesque scenery and a thriving downtown.

Each module on this course is worth a certain number of credits.

In this module you'll learn the principles of scientific inquiry - how to ask clear questions, build testable hypotheses, and design ethical studies in sport and exercise. through lectures, seminars and practical exercises you'll collect reliable data, understand measurement, validity and reliability, run basic analyses, and interpret results across physiology, psychology and biomechanics.

By the end, you'll read research critically, communicate findings in plain english, and use evidence to inform practice, preparing you for advanced methods and domain-specific modules.

You'll explore the core principles of sport and exercise physiology, learning how the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and respiratory systems work together to influence performance, fatigue and recovery.

Through lectures, workshops and practicals, you'll collect physiological data in labs and real-world settings, develop accurate measurement skills, and apply theory to real-life examples.

You'll also build teamwork and leadership skills, be able to analyse and communicate your findings confidently, and develop curiosity and independence through assessments and study, preparing you for advanced modules and further study.

You'll learn about the role of sport psychology practitioners, the different models of practice, and the fundamental ethical considerations when working in sport settings. this module introduces you to the key theoretical concepts in sport psychology and explores how psychological factors influence performance in athletes, teams, and coaches.

You'll develop the foundational knowledge of psychological strategies used in sport, including the theories and research that support these approaches, preparing you for more advanced study of sport psychology applications and interventions.

On this module, you'll learn core biomechanics, including newton's laws, kinematics, and kinetics, and apply them to real sport and exercise scenarios to understand technique, efficiency and injury risk.

You'll take part in lectures, applied labs and seminars where you collect motion, force and muscle activity data with contemporary technologies, process and visualise results, and turn analysis into clear, evidence-based recommendations.

By the end, you'll practise critical thinking, communicate findings to coaches and peers, and show how biomechanics supports performance enhancement and injury prevention.

In this module you'll explore contemporary sport and performance psychology, examining how people think, behave and perform across different ages, abilities and environments.

You'll learn how to evaluate new psychological theories and research, strengthening your ability to analyse evidence and apply scientific conventions with confidence.

These experiences will help you develop key academic and professional skills that prepare you for advanced study in psychology while deepening your understanding of what helps individuals achieve their best.

You'll learn how to enhance athletic performance by developing speed, strength, and power through evidence-based training programmes tailored for individuals and teamsyou'll gain skills in designing programmes, coaching proper movement mechanics, motivating athletes, and collaborating with coaches and physiotherapistsyou'll also learn to assess physical attributes through screening and apply key principles of strength and conditioning with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

You'll learn how regular physical activity protects health across the lifespan, with a special focus on the first two decades when exercise can shape future wellbeing. through practical assessments of physical activity, fitness and key health markers, you'll examine evidence around declining fitness and rising obesity in children and adolescents.

By the end, you'll understand how ageing affects cardiovascular, respiratory and musculoskeletal function, and communicate clear, preventive exercise recommendations for different populations.

You'll learn how heat, cold, hypobaric and hyperbaric environments alter physiology and performance, and how combined stressors change demands in sport and occupational tasks.

You'll take part in lab practicals collecting heart rate, core temperature and ventilation data, analyse patterns across exercise modalities, and interpret responses with clear links to real scenarios.

By the end, you'll communicate impactfocused findings and practical recommendations that improve safety and performance, demonstrating your skills through concise reports and audienceappropriate presentations.

You'll learn the fundamental principles of performance analysis and how operational processes shape practice, alongside core ideas in skill acquisition, including perceptual and cognitive processes in motor learning.

Through hands-on workshops you'll collect and code performance data, perform notational analysis, evaluate key performance indicators, and turn findings into clear feedback for coaching decisions.

You'll also conduct psychological research ethically and safely, develop strong data management and reporting skills, and confidently justify evidence-based recommendations to athletes and coaches.

This year is spent at Brock University, Ontario, Canada. Students complete 120 credits of study at Brock University (BU) in Canada in year 3 of their 4 year dual degree qualification. The specific modules and related student marks will be presented on the BU student award transcript. The performance of UoP students on the BU modules has no bearing on their UoP degree classification other than they need to have completed the full 120 credits.

Core modules

On this module you'll design your own research project, developing your skills in gathering, analysing and interpreting data.

You'll be paired with a supervisor who will support you in your research process of developing methodologies, obtaining ethical approval, and collecting and/or analysing data.

This module will set you up with the research, analytical and communcation skills needed to navigate the rest of your degree.

Optional modules

On this module, you'll learn advanced strength and conditioning principles, integrate current technologies and research, and turn evidence into clear, practical coaching decisions. 

You'll take part in applied tasks where you design and evaluate sessions, interpret athlete data, and adapt programme design for different populations, including female athletes, tactical personnel and those on the long-term athlete development pathway.

By the end, you'll be able to synthesise emerging themes, justify your coaching choices to stakeholders and demonstrate professional practice across diverse performance environments, ready to progress into applied roles or further study.

On this module, you'll learn how skill acquisition theory explains expert performance, and how to use performance analysis to capture, evaluate and interpret the skills that underpin elite performance in sport.

You'll take part in applied tasks where you conduct a needs analysis for an athlete, appraise current research and methods, and select measures that reveal strengths, gaps and development priorities.

Through this part of the course, you'll be able to design and justify evidence-based training practices, communicate recommendations to coaches and athletes, and see their impact in real performance environments.

On this module, you'll learn how sport and exercise psychologists work, comparing models of practice and the philosophical, ethical and practical considerations that underpin effective, person-centred support in diverse sporting environments.

You'll take part in applied tasks where you interpret the nuances of human performance with athletes, teams and coaches, and examine how context, relationships and communication shape psychological work 

Upon completing this module, you'll be able to critically evaluate and justify evidence-based psychological strategies, translate theory and research into practice, and communicate clear, ethical interventions that enhance wellbeing, confidence, and performance.

You'll learn advanced biomechanical principles and industry-standard analysis, collecting motion data and building models in visual3d to produce reliable joint kinematics and clear movement insights. through practical workshops and applied case studies, you'll process datasets, interpret movement patterns, and communicate recommendations to coaches, clinicians and practitioners in sport, exercise and rehabilitation.

By the end, you'll translate technical results into actionable guidance for injury prevention, rehabilitation and performance enhancement, and demonstrate your learning through professional presentations and concise reports.

You'll learn practical and critical data skills, working with messy, real-world sport and health datasets to clean, explore and model patterns that matter.

Through handson workshops, you'll use contemporary analytics tools to answer questions in athlete performance, public health and sport business operations, and complete tasks that mirror professional practice and feed your assessment.

By the end, you'll translate analysis into action by tailoring context-sensitive recommendations for end users - coaches, athletes, health professionals and sport managers - showing how your insights inform decisions and drive innovation.

Exercise medicine and clinical exercise physiology are newer fields that work alongside the established physiotherapy profession, forming an integrated approach to rehabilitation.

You'll learn the scientific principles behind exercise-based rehabilitation and clinical exercise physiology taught by a multidisciplinary team. through weekly theoretical and practical sessions covering different health assessments and clinical exercise practice, you'll develop the skills to assess needs, set goals, and design and progress programmes.

You will also learn to monitor outcomes and justify decisions using evidence and person-centred practice. by the end, you'll communicate clearly with practitioners and clients, reflect on complex cases, and demonstrate your learning through practical plans and presentations.

On this module, you'll learn contemporary applications of core exercise physiology, and how test procedures and protocols shape the quality, validity and usefulness of performance data 

You'll take part in labs and workshops where you design and refine assessments, analyse results, and critically interpret information to guide training decisions and target performance improvements 

Learn to translate research into practice, communicate clear, evidence-based recommendations to coaches and athletes, and justify your choices with sound reasoning that connects science to the end-user.

You'll learn how the body responds and adapts to environmental stress, including thermoregulation, fluid balance, oxygen transport and performance in heat, cold and altitude.

Through lectures and practical activities you'll measure physiological changes, interpret data, and link mechanisms to real scenarios in sport, occupational settings and clinical populations.

By the end, you'll critically evaluate risks and strategies, communicate clear, evidence-based recommendations for adaptation, safety and performance, and demonstrate your understanding through applied tasks and reflective work.

You'll learn how female-specific biomechanics, physiology and psychology shape performance and health, and how individual variation affects training and wellbeing in sport and occupational settings.

Through applied tasks examining breast health, menstrual cycle phases, pregnancy and menopause, you'll assess injury risk and nutritional needs while critiquing the gender gap in research to inform interventions. by the end, you'll design, justify and communicate evidence-based strategies that optimise fitness, performance and wellbeing for female athletes and workers, demonstrating your learning through an applied task.

You'll explore how motor learning and development theories translate into youth practice, examining factors that enhance or compromise typical development and using evidence to guide decisions.

Through hands-on tasks you'll design and justify innovative training programmes, applying ethical and safe procedures to collect, interpret and share your findings.

By the end, you'll contribute towards bps gbc core areas in research methods, cognitive psychology and conceptual and historical issues, demonstrating your learning through an intervention plan and a concise presentation.

You'll explore the science behind sports supplements and their claimed performance benefits, learning how to judge the quality and reliability of research evidence.

Through laboratory practicals, you'll test a range of ergogenic aids such as caffeine, beetroot juice, creatine and antioxidants, and analyse the physiological data you collect.

By the end of the module, you'll be able to separate marketing claims from evidence and communicate informed, practical recommendations for recreational and elite athletes, using your own data as part of the assessment.

We use the best and most current research and professional practice alongside feedback from our students to make sure course content is relevant to your future career or further studies.

Therefore, some course content may change over time to reflect changes in the discipline or industry. If a module doesn't run, we'll let you know as soon as possible and help you choose an alternative module.

How you'll spend your time

One of the main differences between studying at school or college and university is the level of control you have over your learning.

We use a blended learning approach, combining face-to-face teaching with independent study. You’ll take part in lectures, tutorials and lab sessions, alongside guided self‑study in your own time. Throughout your course, you’ll be supported by academic staff and our virtual learning environment, Moodle.

Most timetabled teaching takes place during the day, Monday to Friday. Optional field trips may include evening or weekend activities. There is usually no scheduled teaching on Wednesday afternoons.

A typical week

We recommend you spend at least 35 hours a week studying for your dual degree.

In your first year, you'll be in timetabled teaching activities such as lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical classes and workshops for about 7–9 hours a week. The rest of the time you’ll do independent study such as research, reading, coursework and project work, alone or in a group with others from your course. You'll probably do more independent study and have less scheduled teaching in years 2, 3 and 4 but this depends which modules you choose.

Most timetabled teaching takes place during the day, Monday to Friday. You may occasionally need to go to University and course events in the evenings and at weekends.

Term times

University of Portsmouth (years 1, 2 and 4)

The academic year at University of Portsmouth runs from September to early June with breaks at Christmas and Easter. It's divided into 2 teaching blocks and 2 assessment periods:

  • September to December – teaching block 1
  • January – assessment period 1
  • January to May – teaching block 2 (includes Easter break)
  • May to June – assessment period 2 

Brock University (year 3)

The academic year at Brock runs from September to April with breaks at Easter and in June. It's divided into 2 semesters and 2 exam periods.

The amount of timetabled teaching you'll get on your degree might be less than what you're used to at school or college, but you'll also get face-to-face support from teaching and support staff when you need it. These include the following people and services.

Course costs and funding

How we set our tuition fees

Fees for full-time and part-time undergraduate students from the UK and Channel Islands may increase each year, subject to conditions set by the UK or Channel Islands governments.

Fees for new international and EU undergraduate and postgraduate students (both full-time and part-time) will increase each year, based on factors such as inflation. For continuing students, fees will not increase by more than 5% per year.

Additional costs

We endeavour to be a paperless and sustainable university. As such, files and content is kept electronically on e-databases where possible. Most academics will print the paperwork if required. If you choose to print, photocopy, or bind your work, you may want to budget up to £30 a year for this.

If your final year includes a major project, there could be cost for transport or accommodation related to your research activities. The amount will depend on the project you choose.

You'll need to cover your living costs and pay additional costs to cover your studies at Brock University in Canada.

For the year at Brock University, Canada, students will need to cover the costs of travel, accommodation and subsistence. These costs will vary but they can range from £6,000 - £8,000. You can cover these costs using a UK Government student loan.
